The geologist Azusa Hayano, 66, who has spent most of his life in and around the forest ( Aokigahara Forest, at the base of Mount Fuji, “suicide forest”) and has encountered hundreds of people there, contemplating an end by their own hand. He has persuaded many of them not to kill themselves and rescued scores of others who had already tried and were dying. “He sits down besides them, puts his hand on their shoulders, and just is there as a human being,” . “You think you die alone, but that’s not true. Nobody is alone in this world. We have to coexist and take care of each other. That’s how I feel.” [1]
