ABOUT:
Loren Coleman is one of the world’s leading cryptozoologists. An honorary member of the British Columbia Scientific Cryptozoology Club, and several other international organizations, he is also a Life Member of the International Society of Cryptozoology. Starting his fieldwork and investigations in 1960, after traveling and trekking extensively in pursue of cryptozoological mysteries, Coleman began writing to share his experiences in 1969.
Coleman has written seventeen books and more than three hundred articles, has appeared frequently on radio and television programs, and has lectured throughout North America, as well as in London and at Loch Ness. He has been both on- and off-camera consultant to NBC-TV’s “Unsolved Mysteries,” A & E’s “Ancient Mysteries,” History Channel’s “In Search of History,” Discovery Channel’s “In the Unknown, ” and other reality-based programs. He contributes cryptozoology columns, “On the Trail,” to the London-based magazine Fortean Times, and “Mysterious World” to Fate, as well as regular articles to The Anomalist and Fortean Studies. In 2000, he served as the Senior Series Consultant to the new “In Search Of…” program which is scheduled for future broadcast on Fox and USA Network. During 2002, he was featured in the Sony Studios’ “Search for the Mothman,” available on the DVD of the movie The Mothman Prophecies. He served as the Screen Gems’ national and international publicity spokesperson for their Richard Gere-Mark Pellington movie.
Coleman has been investigating, in the field and in the library, cryptozoological evidence and folklore since the Abominable Snowmen caught his interest over four decades ago, leading him to research mysterious Black Panther sightings and reports of Napes (North American Apes) in the American Midwest. He has traveled to every state in the USA, throughout Canada, Mexico, Scotland, and the Virgin Islands, interviewing witnesses of Lake Monsters, Bigfoot, Giant Snakes, Mystery Felids, Mothman, Thunderbirds, and other cryptids.
His first article was published in 1969. He went on to write two books with Jerome Clark (The Unidentified [1975] and Creatures of the Outer Edge [1978], both published by Warner Books). In the 1980s, Coleman wrote Mysterious America (1983), Curious Encounters (1985), and Tom Slick and the Search for the Yeti (1989), all bestsellers for Faber and Faber. In 1999 Loren Coleman co-authored two books: one with Patrick Huyghe called The Field Guide to Bigfoot, Yeti, and Other Mystery Primates Worldwide (Avon); the other with Jerome Clark called Cryptozoology A to Z: The Encyclopedia of Loch Monsters, Sasquatch, Chupacabras, and Other Authentic Mysteries of Nature (Simon and Schuster/Fireside). During 2002, Linden published the biography, Tom Slick: True Life Encounters in Cryptozoology.
Coleman’s extremely popular Mysterious America: The Revised Edition (2001) and Mothman and Other Curious Encounters (2002) are published by Paraview Press.
Loren Coleman’s special appreciation of his fellow cryptozoologists and hominologists has made him the source of biographical insights, and his obituaries and living commentaries on the leaders of the field have been published widely. National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered,” for example, called on Coleman to speak in tribute of Dr. Grover Krantz who died on Valentine’s Day, 2002.
On 20 October 1997, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the famous filming of a Californian Sasquatch, Loren Coleman was one of the first ten inductees into the forthcoming Roger Patterson Memorial Bigfoot Museum in Portland, Oregon. He has been honored with other regional and national recognitions by his fellow researchers.
Obtaining an undergraduate degree from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, Coleman majored in anthropology, minored in zoology, and did some summer work in archaeology. He received a graduate degree in psychiatric social work from Simmons College in Boston. Coleman was admitted to the Ph.D. programs, and took doctoral coursework in social anthropology at Brandies University, and in sociology at the University of New Hampshire’s Family Research Laboratory.
Coleman has been an instructor, assistant/associate professor, research associate, and documentary filmmaker, in various academic university settings, since 1980. He gave one of the first credit courses on the subject of cryptozoology in 1990, and examined cryptozoology films in his popular documentary course he taught through 2003 at the University of Southern Maine. He has written extensively in human services, having authored, coauthored, or edited eight books, including the critically acclaimed Suicide Clusters (Faber and Faber, 1987), appearing on “The Larry King Show” discussing it. His work on the suicides of baseball players was covered in Sports Illustrated, the Sporting News, ESPN, EPSN Classics and by all the major media and wire services. Loren Coleman can be reached at PO Box 360, Portland, Maine, 04112, USA, or by e-mail.

The ultimate quest for the world’s most mysterious creatures.
The Loch Ness Monster, Bigfoot, the Abominable Snowman — these are the names of the elusive beasts that have caught the eye and captured the imaginations of people around the world for centuries. Recently, tales of these “monsters” have been corroborated by an increase in sightings, and out of these legends a new science has been born: cryptozoology — the study of hidden animals.
Cryptozoology A to Z, the first encyclopedia of its kind, contains nearly two hundred entries, including cryptids (the name given to these unusual beasts), new animal finds, and the explorers and scientists who search for them. Loren Coleman, one of the world’s leading cryptozoologists, teams up with Jerome Clark, editor and author of several encyclopedias, to provide these definitive descriptions and many never-before-published drawings and photographs from eyewitnesses’ detailed accounts. Full of insights into the methods of these scientists, exciting tales of discovery, and the history and evolution of this field, Cryptozoology A to Z is the most complete reference ever of the newest zoological science.
Bigfoot!: The True Story of Apes in America
For years, scientists and researchers have studied, speculated about, and searched for an enigmatic creature that is legendary in the annals of American folklore. Now, learn the truth about…BIGFOOT!
In this fascinating and comprehensive look at the fact, fiction, and fable of the North American “Sasquatch,” award-winning author Loren Coleman takes readers on a journey into America’s biggest mystery — could an unrecognized “ape” be living in our midst? Drawing on over forty years of investigations, interviews, and fieldwork on these incredible beasts, Coleman explores the modern debates about these powerful, ape-like creatures, why they have remained a mystery for so long, and what we can learn about ourselves from these animals, our nearest cousins!
From reports of Bigfoot’s existence found in ancient Native American traditions, to the controversial Patterson-Gimlin film of a Bigfoot in the wild, to today’s Internet sites that record the sightings almost as soon as they occur, Coleman uncovers the past, explains the present, and considers the future of one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in the natural world.
The Unidentified & Creatures of the Outer Edge
Back in print for the first time in decades! THE UNIDENTIFIED and CREATURES OF THE OUTER EDGE, the classic early works of Jerome Clark and Loren Coleman, now in a special double edition with a new introduction by the authors. “The Unidentified” finds the links that connect supernatural folklore, religious visions, cryptozoology, and modern-day UFO stories. It documents episodes from the fringes of human experience and exposes what they may tell us about ourselves and the strange world we live in, where things – whether fairies, ghosts, divine apparitions, or ostensible extraterrestrials – may be even more mysterious than they seem. “Creatures of the Outer Edge” surveys the cryptozoologically bountiful decade of the 1970s (and more) with accounts of Mothman, Owlmen, Thunderbirds, Phantom Panthers, Devil Dogs, Texas Big Birds, and, yes, of course, Bigfoot. Some of the individually “named” local Bigfoot creatures first appeared in this book, including Momo (Missouri Monster), Lake Worth Monster, Murphysboro Mud Monster, the Enfield Thing, El Reno Chicken Man, Noxie Monster, Navajo’s Skinwalkers, and Yukon’s Bushman. The book also introduced the now-iconic Dover Demon for the first time to the general public. Jerome Clark is a longtime ufologist and anomalist, who has appeared on NBC, ABC, the Discovery Channel, the History Channel, and A&E. He has written nearly 20 books, including two Book of the Month Club selections and the award-winning, multi-volume The UFO Encyclopedia, as well as songs recorded by Emmylou Harris, Tom T. Hall, and other country, folk, and bluegrass artists. His most recent book is Unnatural Phenomena. He lives in southwestern Minnesota with his wife, writer and editor Helene Henderson. Loren Coleman is the world’s most popular living cryptozoologist. He appears frequently on television and radio, and has even been turned into a fictional character in novels and comic books. He is the author of more than two dozen books, including Bigfoot!; Mysterious America; and Cryptozoology A to Z (with Jerome Clark). His fieldwork has taken him from Scotland’s Loch Ness to the rainforests of Mexico, from the Everglades to the Pacific Northwest’s Bigfoot country. He lives in Portland, Maine, with his sons.
Bestselling author and noted cryptozoologist Loren Coleman set out on the ultimate mission: to uncover the fun and intriguing phenomena that exist right here in the United States. In Mysterious America, a fun and compulsively readable guidebook to America’s most popular local legends, he prepares readers for their own adventure — where to find the unbelievable spectacles on their journey, including:
Phantom panthers haunting eastern North America
Bay State ghosts and spirits
Mad gassers in Illinois
Champ, the famous Lake Champlain monster
The Minnesota Iceman
The Missouri Momo and the infamous Eastern Bigfoot
And many more!
Coleman’s witty insight and astonishing experiences will captivate followers of Charles Fort and just-plain-curious readers alike. For, as Coleman frankly reveals, these strange creatures and unimaginable wonders may lie just beyond your own backyard….
