Michael Gervers is a Canadian scholar, professor, and researcher who has extensive knowledge and interest in Ethiopian and Eritrean history, art and culture. In his long career, the focus of Professor Gervers’ publications, reviews, presented papers, invited lectures and established academic courses have ranged from Ethiopia medieval history and art history to archaeology, textile history and ethnography. He is a co-founder of an online database of Ethiopian art and culture that contains over 70,000 original photographs, and he was visiting professor in the Department of History at Addis Ababa University in the spring of 2013, where he taught an advanced historical seminar for Ph.D students. Most recently, from his position as professor at the University of Toronto, he has raised funds ($50,000) to establish Canada’s first course in the Ancient Ethiopic language, Ge’ez. His funds were matched by Abel Tesfaye (The Weeknd) and the Office of the Dean of Arts and Science. Personal contributions were also made by the Ethiopian community. This was an effort to establish the University of Toronto as North America’s primary centre for the study of the history, art and culture of Ethiopia and Eritrea. [1]
